Event 1: HALF THE SKY - Women turning oppression into opportunity
 

Date: Saturday, 12 May, 2012
 
Time: 9:30AM - 6:00PM
 
Location: Park Royal South, Corner of Taylor Way and Marine Drive, West Vancouver
 
Based on the bestselling book of the same name, CW4WAfghan Vancouver has been invited to participate with
various non-profit local, national and international organizations to bring the issues of women's
rights or lack of to the forefront in a very large public engagement arena.
 
16 NGOs and charities will have display booths and provide opportunities for the community
to learn of the work they are currently doing locally and internationally.
 
Raffle with gifts and prizes generously donated by West Vancouver merchants.
 
Enjoy entertainment by the Vancouver Universal Gospel Choir and the Harmony Mountain Singers
throughout the day at the centre court, South Mall.
 
Opportunity to support charities through financial giving or volunteering. All organizations are recognized by CRA.
 
Purchase Half the Sky book at Indigo Chapters, Park Royal South Mall and a portion of the book sale
will go to the women’s charities on display
 
Purchase a handmade craft from women in the developing world for Mothers’ Day.
 
Sign a petition to have Bill C 310 passed in order that perpetrators of crimes against women
in foreign countries will be returned to Canada to stand trial.

EVENT 2: Aware-A-Fair

Aware-A-Fair is a humanitarian take action event hosted by high school students in connection with the Red Cross Student CAN network.  The focus is on bringing together various NGOs in an environment where the public, especially youth, has the opportunity to learn about a variety of philanthropic focused topics.
 
CW4WAfghan Vancouver will be participating in this day of awareness providing information on our organization and our projects and selling Afghan handicrafts.


EVENT 3: BREAKING BREAD DINNER WITH GUEST SPEAKER LESLIE KNOTT and the showing of her film "Out of the Ashes" the Rise of the Afghan Men's Cricket team from Refugees to the World Stage.
 
DATE: Friday, 1 June 2012
 
TIME: 6:15PM, reception, marketplace, 7:00PM Dinner followed by speaker and film
 
LOCATION: Shaughnessy Heights United Church, 1550 West 33rd Avenue (west of Granville St) Vancouver
 
TICKETS: $25.00 per person, covering the cost of the dinner, provided by Margarita Trifonova
 
DONATIONS: Suggested charitable donation is $30.00. All contributions are greatly appreciated and will be collected at the event (donation envelopes will be available at your table). Against a backdrop of war and poverty, Out of the Ashes traces the extraordinary journey of a team of young Afghan men
as they chase a seemingly impossible dream - shedding new light on a nation beyond burqas, bombs, drugs and devastation.

This feature-length documentary film follows the Afghan cricket team in their quest against the odds to qualify for the World Cup.
 
Leslie Knott is a filmmaker and photographer who has worked in Afghanistan for the past eight years. In 2004 she set up the women managed Radio Quyaash in northern Afghanistan. In 2007 she started working on the award-winning documentary OUT OF THE ASHES that followed the Afghan Cricket team from the refugee camps to the world cup.

Christopher Alexander was appointed Canadian Ambassador in Residence to Afghanistan in 2003. Between 2005 and 2009 he served as Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

Hedvig Christine Alexander spent seven years in Afghanistan working in international development where she established the Peace Dividend Trust. In 2009, after moving to Canada she launched Jali Designs, a new line of contemporary fashion accessories and homewares from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.
