THIRD ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT
Online Eventbrite tickets may be purchased up until May 5 HERE
We are a group of Vancouver CW4WAfghan members who wish to raise awareness of the issues facing women in Afghanistan through an event featuring a Guest Speaker. This year’s speaker is BBC Correspondent Lyse Doucet. Prior years have featured Sally Armstrong, Canadian journalist, author and documentary filmmaker instrumental in the establishment of CW4WAfghan and Mellissa Fung, award winning journalist and former CBC correspondent whose book “Under and Afghan Sky” documented her abduction in Afghanistan.
Lauryn Oates, PhD. always speaks at our events. Lauryn is a Canadian human rights activist and chapter founder and current Projects Director of Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan.
Women in Afghanistan suffered tremendous losses in education, opportunity, dignity and basic human rights during Taliban rule. However, huge progress has been made in the last decade as Afghan women have struggled to regain a place in public life, with the support of an emerging civil society and the international community.
Working in Partnership with Afghan communities and others, CW4WAfghan contributes to these efforts by funding projects providing 1) basic education; 2) literacy and life skills education; 3) teacher training; and 4) libraries and books to promote literacy. Through the development of these programs, CW4WAfghan beneficiaries have gained the dignity that comes from basic literacy and the ability to inform themselves of the world around them.
