Calgary Workshops Featuring Deborah Ellis

Appearing at the 2017 Calgary International Children’s Festival ( is Order of Canada winning author and social activist Deborah Ellis, who will be speaking to four groups of young people aged 11–13 on themes contained in The Breadwinner – the unforgettable story of Parvana, a girl living under Taliban rule who disguises herself as a boy, so she can work to support her family. This bestseller, which has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide, will provide the context for Ellis to delve more deeply into her experiences with children living in zones of conflict and her sense of inspiration and empowerment because of their courage and resilience. 

CW4WAfghan is excited to be part of the two-day events with special activities for kids to learn more about life and education in Afghanistan, to reach out to their fellow students in Afghanistan, and to discover ways they can become global citizens!
