GAC Awards CW4WAfghan $1.2 Million for GETT Project

Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan Supported by Government of Canada to Strengthen Gender Equity at Teacher Training Colleges in Afghanistan

May 3, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta – Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan) is pleased to announce an award from the Government of Canada, though Global Affairs Canada (GAC), of $1.2 million over four years to support the new GETT Project: Gender Equity in Teacher Training to Improve Girls’ Education in Afghanistan.

Says Lauryn Oates, Executive Director, “This innovative project will promote gender responsive Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) at the subnational level in Afghanistan. The funding will enable us to work with TTC directors, managers and instructors to improve gender-responsiveness in TTCs—ultimately alleviating the chronic shortage of qualified female teachers. Our approach includes improving the capacity of TTCs to increase the capability and enthusiasm of female students to become effective teachers, and to encourage and support both male and female teachers in their practice to promote the participation of Afghan girls in formal education.”

Adds Narmin Ismail-Teja, Chair, Board of Directors, “This project is a direct legacy of earlier support from GAC to our in-service teacher training work in Afghanistan, beginning in 2008. GETT is a continuation of Canada’s investments in teacher education in Afghanistan, and we’re thrilled to now have this emphasis on sustainability, working in partnership now with the Teacher Education Directorate and public teacher training colleges.”

Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan) is a member-based, Canadian federally registered not-for-profit organization (#887718203RR0001) founded in 1998 to advance education and educational opportunities for Afghan women and their families, and to educate Canadians about human rights in Afghanistan. Since 2008, CW4WAfghan has implemented teacher education programs, through a protocol with the Afghan Ministry of Education, resulting in more than 9,700 teachers benefitting from in-service training. In Afghanistan, a talented team of Afghan professionals manage, implement, monitor and deliver CW4WAfghan’s programs in Afghanistan. In Canada, approximately 2000 members demonstrate their commitment as global citizens by supporting the goals of CW4WAfghan. CW4WAfghan volunteers and staff believe that individuals, as global citizens, working in solidarity and with integrity of purpose and action, can affect positive change in the world through education and the promotion of social justice and human rights.
