A Special Message From Catherine Lang For The Giving Season

A Special Message From Catherine Lang For The Giving Season

Dear CW4WAfghan Members,

Just like my niece and former Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang, I am on a mission again. Or rather still.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of two noteworthy occasions, both of which have a Canadian-Afghan connection: those of Michelle’s death at the hands of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the honour killings of the Shafia sisters in Kingston, Ontario.

Here is how these anniversaries are connected.

Within a month of Michelle’s death, I learned that she had planned to visit the Kabul office of the Calgary-based, non-profit society Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan). A tribute to Michelle in the organization’s January 2010 newsletter instantly caught my attention.

She wanted to cover a much under-reported side of what is happening in Afghanistan and how Afghan men, women and children are pushing forward to bring education to their communities and to work together to pull their country out of the horrors of the past. Michelle was one of the many remarkable Canadians helping to make it happen.
