Statement in Response to Attack on Barchi Hospital

Statement in Response to Attack on Barchi Hospital

CW4WAfghan is shocked, angered and saddened by the news of a horrific attack on the Barchi Hospital in the Dasht-e Barchi neighbourhood of Kabul this morning. We mourn the tragic loss of the 14 people confirmed so far who lost their lives, among them new mothers, infants and hospital nurses. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, and the people of Afghanistan as they mourn this heinous crime against humanity.

We at CW4WAfghan strongly condemn today’s attack. We are acutely aware of the impact it will have on people and communities in Afghanistan, now left to navigate through the devastating grief left in the wake of this senseless act of violence that targeted the most innocent and vulnerable in a society already besieged by conflict, and at a time when limited health infrastructure is stretched far beyond capacity.

With women and children specifically targeted, the Barchi Hospital attack highlights the acute need for our continued and increasing engagement to protect the rights of these seriously at-risk groups, and reaffirms our commitment as an organization to continue our work. We stand in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan in calling for an end to the violence that inhibits Afghan women and girls from realizing their full potential, and places them in the line of danger, as so tragically and cruelly demonstrated today in this deliberate attack targeting a maternity hospital in Kabul.

As an organization invested in the rights of women and children in Afghanistan to live their lives with dignity and contribute to secure, healthy and vibrant futures for their people, CW4WAfghan knows this cannot happen without personal and community safety and security. This horrific event must serve as a wake up call to the international community to commit to nothing less than the full protection of women and girls in Afghanistan from the threats to their rights posed by terrorist groups such as the Taliban and ISIS.
